Morning
Oslo, as the capital of Norway, has an abundance of things to do. Read our guide here for ideas for a perfect Oslo trip. Once you've explored Oslo, then rent a car and follow the itinerary below!
Leaving Oslo on the E6, drive north towards Lillehammer, taking 2 hours in total. Today's drive will be a short one, as the afternoon can be spent visiting Lillehammer.
Lillehammer is a charming town, best known for hosting the 1994 Winter Olympics and offers a perfect blend of outdoor adventures, including skiing and hiking.
Afternoon
If visiting during the winter, why not try out some winter sports whilst you're there? If visiting during the summer, you can still drive close to the venues and imagine what it was like when the Olympics was hosted there.

Where to Stay on Night 1
There are a few decent options to stay in Lillehammer:
Scandic Lillehammer Hotel
A large hotel near the Olympic venues, it is often used as a conference site and had a wide breakfast offering
Aksjemollen by Classic Norway Hotels
A nice hotel with refurbished rooms in the centre of town. A good option for a relaxing evening.

Day 2: Lillehammer to Trondheim
Drive time for the day: 5 hours
Highlights: Sohlbergplassen and Trondheim
Morning
Depart Lillehammer after breakfast for Ringebu Stavkirk.
Stavkirk (or "Stave Church" in English) are most common in Norway. This one in particular dates back to as early as year 1270. It is open during summer months, so spend some time exploring inside the church.
Afterwards, follow the Rondane National Scenic Route, to continue driving north for an hour to Sohlbergplassen.
This is the first of many scenic viewing points on the road trip. Located in Rondane National Park, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Spend some time here to take in Norway's dramatic natural beauty.
Continue driving 1.5 hours up to Magalaupet, a waterfall located just south of Oppdal. Take a quick break here by admiring the waterfall across the bridge.
Afternoon
Have lunch in the town of Oppdal, and afterwards, continue to drive up north towards Trondheim, this will take around 2 hours.
After arriving in Trondheim, check in to your hotel and go out to explore the city.
Trondheim offers a wide range of activities for travelers looking to explore its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural surroundings.
Start your visit at Nidaros Cathedral, the largest medieval building in Scandinavia and a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, where you can climb to the top for panoramic views of the city.
Stroll along the charming streets of Bakklandet, a historic district filled with colorful wooden houses, cozy cafes, and unique boutiques, perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee by the river.
If you have time, also consider the short scenic hike up to Kristiansen Fortress.

Where to Stay on Night 2
As one of the larger cities in Norway, there is an abundance of hotels to choose from, ranging from budget to luxury:
Radisson Blu Royal Garden Hotel
Located in town next to the River Nidelva, this 4* hotel has range of nice rooms to choose from.
Britannia Hotel
One of the most luxury hotels in Trondheim, if not Norway entirely, it is a well regarded hotel with a pool and other high-end facilities, letting you rest well after exploring Trondheim.

Day 3: Trondheim to Haholmen
Drive time for the day: 5 hours
Highlights: Atlantic Road, Haholmen
Morning
Today's drive will take you from Trondheim, going via the Atlantic Road, to the idyllic hotel of Haholmen.
The Atlantic Road is a 36km stretch of road which is part of the National Scenic Route network, located along the western coast of Norway, starting from the town of Bud in the southern end, up to Karvag in the northern end.
Start by driving towards Kjeksa Rasteplass, a viewing point near the southern end of the Atlantic Road, where you can look out and enjoy the view of the sea.
Afternoon
Continue driving along the scenic route, stopping briefly at Askevagen Viewpoint, before driving to a stopping point just north of the iconic Storseisundbrua Bridge (pictured to the right), on Eldhusoya island.
Here, you will find an elevated path, which brings you to the other side of the island where you can continue to enjoy the amazing views.
For the evening, we recommend staying at the Haholmen hotel. This was one of our favourite hotels on our trip to Norway, so read more about it on our guide!
It's only a short drive from Eldhusoya, where you will then arrive at the car park to switch to the ferry service to the hotel.

Where to Stay on Night 3
We highly recommend the following hotel, be sure to book in advance as it's a relatively small hotel with limited number of rooms, especially during peak season
Haholmen
A hotel located just off the shore on its own island, its breathtaking scenery complemented by the hospitality there will make you feel like you've stepped into a secluded paradise. Read more about this hotel in our guide here.
Day 4: Haholmen to Sylte
Drive time for the day: 4-5 hours
Highlights: Andalsnes - Dombas Railway, Gudbrandsjuvet
Morning
Start the day by driving 2 hours to Andalsnes, backing track and visiting the Atlantic Road if you would like to.
When you arrive at Andalsnes, jump aboard the train which takes you along the scenic railway route towards Dombas. (Make sure to research the latest timings beforehand, you can also book online at the official SJ Norway website).
The train journey takes around 1 hours and 20 minuntes one-way, and I recommend getting the next available train back. During the journey, you'll see scenic mountainous and river views, where you can pause to take the breathtaking landscapes as you travel through Norway's stunning wilderness
Afternoon
The northern part of the Geiranger - Trollstigen National Scenic Route will take us to the destination for tonight. However, due to Trollstigen being at a high altitude, this road is only open during summer months.
Option 1 (if the Andalsnes to Trollstigen route is closed)
Drive westwards towards Kokarsteinen, a cafe/rest stop located on the mountainside next to the river. It's a good place for a quick stop, pick up a snack or ice cream whilst enjoying the view, to take a break from the drive.
Then head towards Gudbrandsjuvet, a stunning and dramatic gorge in Norway, where the Valldøla River thunders through narrow rock formations, offering spectacular viewpoints and a chance to witness the raw power and beauty of nature. There is also a cafe located here to pick up any quick refreshments.
Continue further up, and if you are travelling during the winter or spring, you'll be treated to stunning views of ice formations lining the roadside and draping the mountains, creating a breathtaking display of nature's beauty.
Depending on how much the Scenic Route is closed, you may be able to get up to the Trollstigen viewpoint. From here you can see panoramic views of one of Norway's most famous and dramatic mountain roads, where steep cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and hairpin turns create an unforgettable experience amidst the rugged beauty of the Norwegian landscape.
Option 2 (if the Andalsnes to Trollstigen route is open)
Instead of going through the detour above, head straight to Trollstigen viewpoint (see above), before making your way down to Gudbrandsjuvet.
Conclude the day's drive by heading to Sylte, a quaint village nestled at the head of the majestic Valldal valley.

Where to Stay on Night 4
Sylte is a small village, so there aren't many options, but we recommend the hotel below. Alternatively, there are other towns nearby with other hotel options.
Valldal Fjordhotell by Classic Norway Hotels
A charming, waterfront hotel nestled along the picturesque Nordalsfjord, offering modern comfort with stunning fjord and mountain views, making it an ideal retreat for nature lovers and those seeking tranquility in the heart of Norway's natural beauty.

Day 5: Sylte to Skei
Drive time for the day: 3-4 hours
Highlights: Geirangerfjord, Kjenndal Glacier
Morning
Drive to Ornesvingen viewpoint, where you can catch your initial glimpse of the first highlight of the day - the Geirangerfjord. From here, you can overlook the town of Geiranger itself.
The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a breathtaking village set amidst dramatic fjords, towering cliffs, and cascading waterfalls, offering visitors an unforgettable experience of Norway’s most iconic natural landscapes.
Head down via the town itself, and up towards the other side to Flydalsjuvet viewpoint, offering another view of Geiranger from the opposite angle.
Stop by the Norwegian Fjord Centre, also located just outside of town, to learn all about what the Fjords have to offer in Norway.
Feel free to explore the town if you have time, before heading on a Fjord River Cruise to Hellesylt (approx 1 hour long). You can take your car with you on the river cruise, but please book online here in advance, and be sure to check timings as there are only a few departures every day. Note that this cruise may only be available during summer months, but there is a road alternative.
Afternoon
Drive towards the town of Loen, where you will find the infamous Loen Skylift, a cable car taking you to the top of Mount Hoven, offering panoramic views of Nordfjord below.
Note: As tickets for the skylift are relatively expensive, we recommend only going up if the weather is clear and you can see afar. Tickets do not need to be bought in advance.
Afterwards, a short drive will take you to Kjenndal Glacier. This is definitely another one of the highlights of the roadtrip. Note that to get to the closest point of the Glacier, the car has to go through a toll - but it's worth paying the price!
The Kjenndal Glacier is a breathtaking glacier that descends from Norway's largest ice cap. The glacier’s dramatic blue ice and rugged surrounding landscape make it a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers, offering a unique glimpse into the raw power and beauty of glacial formations. On route, you will also see a beautiful bright turquoise coloured lake.
Finish off the day by driving southwards to the hotel for the night, either to Jolster, or further south to Sogndal. The next day will be a long day so Sogndal is preferable, to avoid having to start the day too early.

Where to Stay on Night 5
There isn't wide choice of hotels around this area, but these are the ones that we would recommend:
Thon Partner Hotel, Jolster
A 3* hotel located in the small village of Jolster
Quality Hotel Sogndal
A 4* hotel located in the centre of Sogndal, it is a comfortable place to stay for the night

Day 6: Skei to Myrkdalen
Drive time for the day: 4 hours
Highlights: Aurlandsfjellet, Flam
Morning
As this is a relatively long day packed full of exciting viewpoints and scenery, it is advisable to start the day early in order to get to Flam in time. If you prefer slower travel, then it is possible to break this into two separate days, staying in Flam overnight.
Start by driving south towards Laerdalsoyri, where you'll have two options to go from here
Option 1: Leardal Tunnel
The Laerdal Tunnel is the longest road tunnel in the world, stretching over 24.5 km and connecting the towns of Laerdal and Aurland in Norway. This engineering marvel features specially designed illuminated caverns to help reduce driver fatigue, making the journey through the mountains both efficient and visually fascinating.
This tunnel takes you through directly to Aurland, which is close to the next destination of Flam.
Option 2: Aurlandsfjellet
This road, which winds up towards the mountains of Aurlandsfjellet, is only open during the summer months. It is often called the "Snow Road," and is a scenic mountain pass in Norway offering breathtaking panoramic views of fjords, valleys, and snow-capped peaks, providing a dramatic and unforgettable driving experience.
There are a number of stopping points along the Aurlandsfjellet National Scenic Route, such as Vardahaugselvi Waterfall and Vedahaugane.
Flotvatnet is also en-route, which is a serene mountain lake, with peaceful, reflective waters surrounded by snow-capped peaks and stunning natural beauty in the heart of Norway's highlands.
As you drive down, also stop by the Stegastein Viewpoint, which offers a stunning view of the Aurlandsfjord below.

Where to Stay on Night 6
Although we would recommend Myrkdalen Hotel due its low price during the summer season, there are also a number of hotels which you can stay in either Flam of Vossvangen
Myrkdalen Hotel
A modern mountain resort in the heart of Voss, offering year-round comfort and easy access to skiing in winter and outdoor activities like hiking and biking during the summer months.
Scandic Voss
A contemporary hotel located in the center of Voss, offering convenient access to the region's adventure activities and stunning natural surroundings, perfect for both relaxation and outdoor enthusiasts
Afternoon
Spend the afternoon in Flam, a famous tourist hotspot especially with cruise passengers. Flam offers two attractions for travellers to enjoy the beautiful scenic view.
Start by taking a round-trip on the Flam Railway. This is often regarded as one of the world’s most scenic train journeys, winding through Norway's dramatic landscapes from the fjord village of Flam to the mountainous Myrdal station. Along the route, passengers are treated to breathtaking views of steep valleys, cascading waterfalls, and snow-covered peaks, making it a must-do experience for travelers seeking to explore Norway’s natural beauty.
Once you're back to Flam, you can then take the Flam - Gudvangen Cruise, which offers a spectacular hour-long journey through the UNESCO-listed Naeroyfjord, one of the most beautiful and narrow fjords in Norway. As you sail between towering cliffs and waterfalls, you’ll experience the beauty of the fjord’s dramatic landscapes, making it an unforgettable highlight of any trip to the region. You can either do a round trip on the cruise if time permits, or alternatively there is also a shuttle bus which transports you straight back to your car in Flam.
Note that you can purchase tickets in advance, and if you're late to your original booked time, you can try asking to be put on a later train/ferry at the information desk, and they'll happily amend your booking if there's space available.
Finish your day by driving to Myrkdalen Hotel, a popular ski resort during the winter months. While skiing isn't available in the summer, the hotel remains open year-round, offering a comfortable and welcoming place to relax and recharge for the night.

Afternoon
Continue the day by driving to Skjervfossen, a breathtaking waterfall cascading 150 meters down a lush, rocky mountainside. Experience the power and beauty of the falls up close, making it a perfect stop to enjoy the view.
Drive along the northern bank of Hardangerfjord, Norway's second-longest fjord renowned for its stunning landscapes, whilst driving to Tyrvefjora.
Here, you can have stunning views of the fjord's serene waters and surrounding mountains, making it a peaceful spot for a quick stop, enjoying the view of the towering mountains in the background.
