Nestled in the centre of Shanghai's Huangpu district, Yu Gardens 豫园 is split into two adjacent areas. One which is a masterpiece of classical Chinese garden design and a cherished symbol of Ming Dynasty culture.

Secondly there's also the bustling Yuyuan Old Street, offering visitors a vibrant mix of local crafts, food, and souvenirs. Here you can enjoy local delicacies and a taste of Chinese cuisine which is hard to find abroad.

Top Tips

Visit the gardens during daytime where you can appreciate the grand historic architecture. Then come back to the Old Street in the evening to see the luminous glow from the buildings and enjoy your dinner here

How to get here

Take metro lines 10 or 14 and get off at Yu Garden station, and a short walk will take you here

Yuyuan Old Street 豫园老街

This is a vibrant historic district that captures the essence of traditional Chinese architecture and culture. The bustling pedestrian streets are lined with beautifully preserved Ming and Qing-style buildings, featuring upturned eaves, intricate wood carvings, and red lanterns that evoke a sense of timeless charm.

It acts as a hub food, as well as shops selling traditional crafts, antiques, tea and souvenirs. Here you will find restaurants and food stalls serving authentic Shanghainese cuisine, including dumplings, steamed buns, and other traditional Chinese delicacies.

Where to Eat

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant 南翔馒头店

A Michelin recommended restaurant, it was established in 1900 and has been a very popular place for its Xiaolongbao (Chinese soup dumplings). Don't fret if you see a long queue for the main restaurant, as there are plenty of seats upstairs. Alternatively, there is also a takeaway store downstairs.

Yuyuan Old Street also has plenty of shops where you can purchase traditional Chinese souvenirs to bring home and gift your friends and family. These include arts and crafts, tea leaves, silk products and many more!

Beyond its commercial allure, Yuyuan Old Street serves as a cultural showcase, hosting seasonal festivals, performances, and exhibitions that highlight local traditions and folklore. Visitors can explore the narrow alleys, discover hidden courtyards, and experience the lively ambiance of a place where history meets modern life.

Yu Garden 豫园

A sharp contrast with the adjacent Old Street, Yu Garden itself was built over 400 years ago. The garden spans five acres and features a harmonious blend of pavilions, rockeries, ponds, and lush greenery that reflect traditional Chinese aesthetics and philosophy.

Highlights within the garden include the Grand Rockery, a towering structure of limestone, and the exquisite Jade Rock, celebrated for its intricate shape and translucent quality.

As the garden itself is not too big, it is good for a quick stop as a break between exploring Shanghai.
